1.5 Million Knots. One Extraordinary Rug.
There are some facts about handmade rugs that never lose their ability to amaze us.
Since we first began working with these extraordinary handmade rugs in 2008, we've learned countless fascinating things about their craftsmanship. Yet some facts still astonish us today just as much as they did then.
Many of the hand-knotted Mamluk rugs in our collection each contain around 1.5 million individual hand-tied knots.
Take a moment to think about that.
Not machine made. Not woven by computer. Each knot tied by hand, one at a time. Around 1.5 million times.
Our handmade Mamluks are among the finest rugs in our collection. They represent contemporary Afghan weaving at its finest, combining exceptional artisan craftsmanship with remarkable decorative beauty.
At first glance, you see their beautiful colours and intricate designs. Look a little closer, though, and you'll discover what makes them truly extraordinary.

Why so many?
The answer lies in the rug's knot density.
The Mamluk rug featured here is woven to a 50 × 50 knot count. That means there are approximately 50 knots across every 10 centimetres and 50 knots down every 10 centimetres.
That creates around 2,500 knots in every 10cm square.
Multiply that across a rug measuring just over six square metres and you arrive at an astonishing total of around 1.5 million individual knots.
Every single one was tied by the weaver before being carefully trimmed, washed and finished.

Every tiny knot matters
When people hear the phrase hand-knotted, it's easy to underestimate what that really means.
These aren't printed patterns.
They're not machine made.
Every tiny coloured point you can see is an individual knot of wool tied by hand around the cotton foundation before the next knot is tied beside it.
One knot, then another, then another, until there are around 1.5 million of them.

Why does it matter?
A high knot count isn't simply about creating an impressive number.
The exceptionally high knot density allows the weaver to create astonishing levels of detail.
Tiny flowers, fine outlines, delicate curves and minute changes of colour all become possible because of the extraordinary precision of the weave.
It's rather like comparing a low-resolution image with an ultra-high-definition photograph. More knots give the weaver greater precision, allowing every motif to be created with extraordinary clarity.

Afghan artistry at its finest
Inspired by historic Mamluk designs, these rugs represent contemporary Afghan weaving at its finest, combining exceptional artisan craftsmanship with remarkable decorative beauty. Woven by highly skilled artisans using traditional techniques that have been passed down through generations, they beautifully bridge centuries of weaving heritage with timeless design for modern homes.
Every handmade rug in our showroom tells its own story, but pieces like these demonstrate just how extraordinary the skill of traditional weaving can be.
Beautiful when admired from across a room.
Even more astonishing when viewed close-up.

The human story
Whenever we describe a rug as hand-knotted, this is what we mean.
Someone sat patiently at a loom, selected each colour, tied every single knot by hand, trimmed it and then moved on to the next. They repeated that process around 1.5 million times.
That's not just craftsmanship.
That's extraordinary patience, dedication and artistry woven into every rug.

Next time you see a handmade rug...
Take a closer look.
Not just at the pattern, but at the craftsmanship.
Hidden beneath every design is a story told one knot at a time.
Sometimes, 1.5 million times.
